Coupon & Deal Glossary

Every shopping and deal term you need to know, explained in plain English.

BOGO

Buy One Get One — a promotion where purchasing one item entitles you to a second item for free or at a reduced price. Common variations include BOGO Free, BOGO 50% Off, and Buy 2 Get 1 Free.

Cashback

A savings mechanism where a percentage of your purchase amount is returned to you after the transaction. Cashback can come from credit cards, browser extensions (like Rakuten), or retailer loyalty programs.

Clearance

Products marked down significantly (often 50-90% off) because the retailer is discontinuing them or making room for new inventory. Clearance items are typically final sale.

Coupon

A voucher or code that entitles the holder to a discount on a particular product or from a particular retailer. Online coupons are typically alphanumeric codes entered at checkout.

Coupon Stacking

The practice of combining multiple coupons, discounts, or savings mechanisms on a single purchase to maximize total savings. Not all retailers allow stacking.

A numerical rating (typically 0-100) that indicates how good a deal is relative to the product's normal price, discount depth, and user ratings. Higher scores indicate better deals.

Discount Code

An alphanumeric string entered during online checkout to receive a reduction in price. Functionally identical to a promo code or coupon code.

Doorbuster

An extremely deep discount offered for a limited time, typically at the start of a major sale event like Black Friday. Doorbusters are designed to attract shoppers with irresistible deals.

Flash Deal

A time-limited discount that is available for a very short period, typically a few hours. Flash deals often feature countdown timers and limited quantities.

Free Shipping

A promotion where the retailer covers the cost of shipping. Free shipping may require a minimum purchase amount or a specific promo code.

Lightning Deal

Amazon's term for a flash deal — a time-limited promotion with a limited quantity of discounted items. Lightning Deals typically last 4-12 hours.

Liquidation

The process of selling off inventory at deeply discounted prices, often because a store is closing or a product line is being discontinued. Liquidation sales can offer 70-90% off.

Loyalty Program

A retailer rewards program that offers points, discounts, or perks to repeat customers. Examples include Target Circle, Sephora Beauty Insider, and Kohl's Rewards.

Markdown

A reduction in the original selling price of an item. Markdowns can be temporary (sale) or permanent (clearance). Multiple markdowns may occur over time.

Minimum Purchase

The minimum order amount required to qualify for a specific discount or promotion. For example, "$20 off orders over $100" has a $100 minimum purchase requirement.

Open Box

A product that has been returned by a previous customer and is being resold at a discount. Open-box items are typically in like-new condition and may come with a warranty.

Price Match

A retailer policy that guarantees they will match a competitor's lower price on the same item. Many major retailers including Best Buy, Target, and Walmart offer price matching.

Price Protection

A policy where a retailer will refund the difference if an item you purchased drops in price within a specified window (typically 7-30 days after purchase).

Rebate

A partial refund offered after a purchase is made. Rebates require the buyer to submit proof of purchase (receipt) to receive the refund, typically via mail or online form.

Refurbished

A product that has been returned, repaired, tested, and certified to work like new. Manufacturer-refurbished items often come with warranties and offer 20-40% savings.

Rollback

Walmart's term for a temporary price reduction. Rollback prices are lower than the everyday price but are not permanent — they revert after the promotion ends.

Sale Price

A temporarily reduced price offered during a promotional period. Sale prices revert to the original price when the promotion ends.

Sitewide

A promotion that applies to all products on a retailer's website, with few or no exclusions. Sitewide sales are the most valuable because they apply to everything.
